What are MapShapes?
MapShapes are graphic art collections for creating maps, charts, reports, and dynamic visualizations of geographic data. Each MapShapes set includes Microsoft Visio map shapes stencils and Microsoft Windows Metafiles (.emf) so that you can use them with any Microsoft Office application and more.
How do MapShapes work with Visio?
Each MapShape is an intelligent graphic object on a Visio stencil that enables you to create spectacular map artwork with all of the powerful features that make Visio the drawing software of choice for business and technical users. MapShapes work with any version of Visio. If you are a Visio 2007 user, you can also use the Data Linking and Data Graphics features to create dynamic visualizations. Link data from Excel, Access, SharePoint, or other sources to your map shapes. Display the data in your map shapes with Visio 2007 Data Graphics to illustrate and communicate complex information clearly and efficiently.
Are MapShapes "clip art"?
MapShapes are such a great value because they are much more more than clip art. They work especially well with Visio because you can drag and drop the geographic map shapee that you need from the MapShapes Visio stencils to your page. Visimation sets Visio SmartShape automation to place each area in its proper relative position to other areas. The locations come directly from GIS data so that you can be sure of their accuracy. When you move or resize the map shapes you can easily restore them to their programmed locations and sizes so they will once again fit with neigboring areas.
However, Visio is not required. Most quality clip art are in a vector format such as Windows Enhanced Metafile, or .emf. In addition to the Visio stencils, MapShapes include a separate set of.emf images so that you can use them with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. These individual map shape files can be loaded into your Clipart Library or you can simply add them to a document using the Insert - Picture menu in any Microsoft Office application.
How accurate are MapShapes?
MapShapes are derived from data produced by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that model the surface of the earth with pinpoint accuracy. GIS data are used by governments, utilities, energy companies, and military organizations to mathematically track boundaries and locate critical resources. Visimation transforms GIS data into graphic objects and can render them using a variety of standard mapping projections.

Map Generation Information
Each map shape has been generated using Albers Equal Area conic projections. The contiguous ("lower") 48 states and the District of Columbia were all generated with the same projection and a 1:20,000,000 scale. Alaska and Hawaii were generated using different projections and scales of 1:30,000,000. Map shape boundaries have been simplified using the Douglas-Peuker algorithm with a tolerance of 1/800th of an inch.
